And it seems to support my theory that there is something special about spittle as the Wet: "Wetting the stone with saliva creates even faster results as this contains proteins that thicken when pressure is exercised."

I was somewhat surprised by the saliva claim, but it seems to be corroborated -

Thanks for posting this - very interesting and well researched. There was quite a "grindstone" industry here in Atlantic Canada as well, but its all gone now.
